Mapping Our Mission
The Diocese of Bunda serves communities across northern Tanzania, including the mainland of Bunda District and the islands of Lake Victoria such as Ukara and Ukerewe. The region is rich in faith, culture, and history, where parish communities continue a mission that began with early evangelization in the Lake Victoria area.

Map of bunda
Established on November 27, 2010, by Pope Benedict XVI, the Diocese of Bunda is a unique landscape of faith. Our borders bridge the mainland of Mara with the vibrant island communities of Lake Victoria, uniting two histories into one mission.

Through its network of 28 parishes, the Diocese serves both rural and island communities, supporting spiritual life, education programs, healthcare initiatives, and charitable outreach.

OUR COMMUNITY
The Mother Mission: Our story begins in 1879 at Bukumbi, the refuge for former slaves and the training ground for the first Tanzanian catechists.
The Island Gateway: In 1892, the Gospel arrived in Ukerewe. Despite early trials and the sacrifice of 30 martyrs at Mwiboma, the faith took root, symbolized today by the historic stone church at Kagunguli.
The Mainland Bridge: From the pier at Kisaria, missionaries crossed the Rugizi Channel by dhow, moving inland through Kibara to reach the hills of Bunda.
Cultural Highlights
Kagunguli (The Holy Pilgrimage): Visit the graves of the early missionaries and the site where the first permanent stone church stands as a memorial to those who died for their faith.
The First Fruits: We honor the legacy of Fr. Celestine Kipanda Kasisi, one of the first Tanzanians ordained to the priesthood in 1917, now resting at Kagunguli Parish.
Agricultural Roots: Look for the ancient mango trees on the islands—living witnesses to the White Fathers who introduced new farming techniques to the region over a century ago.
